Challenges and opportunities in
defence & maritime and transport & logistics

May 20th 2016, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

INTRODUCTION

Autonomous systems are disruptive technologies that will fundamentally change society and industry. The development of autonomous systems presents scientific, technological and societal challenges. In order to interact in complex environments and in collaboration, increased capabilities of autonomous systems to perceive, communicate, judge and take action are required. Competencies from different areas of knowledge are needed in order to develop key capabilities and the technologies need to be integrated in harmony to form a single entity or a group of entities that operate together. Many of these systems will operate together with humans in our daily lives which poses challenges to regulations and authorities.

In this Workshop, we will take a deeper look into the challenges and opportunities for autonomous systems in Brazil while strengthening and creating bridges for academic and industrial collaborations. The workshop covers three tracks, two technical tracks focused on defece & security and transport & logistics and a track to discuss about academic collaborations, focused on high level management.

Session A
Defence & Maritime

A focus on ground military vehicles, underwater vehicles and offshore robotics for oil & gas.

Session B
Transport & Logistics

A focus on ground vehicles such as trucks, buses and cars. Covering aspects about the context and opportunities in Brazil, legal aspects and technical challenges.

Session C
Institutional Cooperation

A forum for discussions on the creation of bridges for collaboration in autonomous systems.

Participation in the event is per invitation. The workshop is arranged by CISB, Linköping University (LiU) and Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME), with support from the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Lars Nielsen, Director for WASP
Professor Linköping University

Lars Nielsen is since 1992 professor at Linköping University in the endowed chair Sten Gustafsson Professor of Vehicular Systems. Since 2015 he is also Program Director of Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program. WASP is Sweden’s largest ever individual research program, and provides a platform for academic research and education, fostering interaction with Sweden’s leading technology companies. In 2014 he received the Håkan Frisinger award motivated by, among other factors, being one of Sweden’s internationally best known and cited researchers in the field of vehicles and transportation.

Janito Ferreira
Professor University of Campinas

Janito Ferreira began his teaching activities at UNICAMP in 1984 where it remains until now. He has taught courses mainly in the areas of Dynamic Systems Analysis, Vibration Analysis, Experimental and Applied Mechanics, Control Systems and Embedded System Projects, at undergraduate and graduate level . His research activities are related to the field of vibration control, autonomous vehicles, internal combustion engines, mathematical modeling and experimental validation systems. He founded the Autonomous Mobility Laboratory in 2010, where is currently coordinating three projects. He also maintains active international partnership collaborating in the area of autonomous vehicles, involving the Technological University of Compiègne and the Brest National School of Engineers.
